Turkey: a lightning trip chasing huge wild boars.

Turkey: wild boar hunting paradise.

For many years, Turkey has been a world reference when it comes to wild boar hunting. With a majority of if population being Muslim and following the lead of Judaism, the very first monotheistic religion which considered pigs as impure animals, it was Prophet Muhammad who, 1,500 years later also pointed out pigs as tainted creatures. According to anthropologist Marvin Harris, there are several reasons which led Muslims to consider these precious animals in such a way. Whatever these reasons may be, all we know is that due to this believe, Turkey continues to be a true paradise for wild boar hunting.

Despite the number of outfitters in the country has increased exponentially during the last ten years -leaving aside their apprehension for wild boars and turning it into an attractive source of income- hence, adding an extra pressure on wildlife, the hunting territories are so infinite and inaccessible that still today we are able to find unspoilt hunting grounds -with active wildlife management taking place- where the chances of getting huge wild boars are very high. Beyond that, the lower temperatures have led to warmer winters, which at the same time has resulted in rich supplies for animals to feed and has driven the wild boar population to increase limitless.

Ignacio, passionate about Pyrenean Chamois and crazy for “fat bacons”.

Ignacio, the main character of our last hunt is a true gentleman who we had the opportunity to meet many year ago and for whom we have been honoured to arrange a few international hunting trips. He got his firs wild boar (“fat bacons” -as he likes to call them-) at the age of 12 and throughout his 66 years of hunting he has been able to achieve one of the very best Pyrenean Chamois collections of all times. Given his long-lasting hunting experience, the way he enjoys every hunt is indeed a source of pride for all of us at Camino Real Hunting Consultants.

Let’s go for it!

After a few hunts with us in Turkey, last March -yes, already one year ago-, Ignacio had the intention to try again for “fat bacons” with a good friend of his and his son. Days before their departure, we were forced to cancel due to the pandemic. Since then, the expectations to go back were not good and waiting such a long time seemed unending.

It had only been a few days since Turkey had decided to open its borders when I received a phone call from Ignacio: “Alvaro, can we make it…NOW?”. It was Tuesday night and there was not much to think about. Let me highlight that Ignacio comes from Pamplona, so he is very used to Run the Bulls in San Fermin…you can imagine that he never accepts a “NO” as an answer. Having confirmed with our partner outfitter that many huge wild boars were hitting the baits, Ignacio booked his tickets for Friday morning!!.

A happy outcome is worth waiting for.

After an endless lockdown, all we needed was a PRC test taken within a maximum of 72 hours before the flight and Ignacio was ready for action. The airports, although having very few people, were operating with complete normality and Ignacio did not experience any hassles, getting to his connection flight and arriving to his final destination at the expected time.

Every evening we would get a phone call with the complete report of the day. During the three-night hunt, Ignacio did not only enjoy every single moment, but he was able to shoot 16 different boars, of which 10 of them turned out to be outstanding tuskers. The good work delivered by our outfitter, as well as the amazing management performed in some of the most unspoilt territories in Turkey reveals that the efforts put during these difficult months were definitely worth it. We want to thank everybody involved in the hunt, especially Ignacio, without whom nothing of this could have been possible. Congratulations my friend and we hope to see you again chasing “fat bacons” in Turkey.
